Thomas Tuchel told Chelsea should ignore Robert Lewandowski to sign Antonio Conte's dream star

Chelsea News: Robert Lewandowski has been linked to a move to the Premier League but a Serie A star has been touted as a better option for Thomas Tuchel

Timo Werner out, Romelu Lukaku gone to compensate for the arrivals of both Robert Lewandowski and another forward player? That’s the conundrum manager Thomas Tuchel and soon-to-be new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly have on their hands after the Blues’ lack of prolificacy in front of goal was on show once again as Liverpool won the FA Cup final.

Although the penalty shootout was shorter this time around, there were many similarities between this season’s Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals. Great performances in defence weren’t in attack as the likes of Christian Pulisic, Marcos Alonso, Mason Mount and Lukaku spurned great chances throughout the whole contest.

“Well, I think like in the last final, the Carabao Cup, no regrets. I told the team I am proud. I was super proud before and happy before the match to arrive with this group. We were sure we were competitive and we could make life very difficult for Liverpool. We did it again,” Tuchel reflected in his post-match press conference. “We struggled in the first 15 minutes but then we were excellent through the match. It’s now 240 minutes of final time and we played 0-0 against maybe the most dangerous attacking team in the world. We created a lot of chances and we deserved them, as they deserved theirs as well.

“Then again we lose on penalties. We are disappointed, of course, and we are sad. But at the same time proud because we left anything that we need [on the pitch.” Amid all the takeover uncertainty, rumours continue to swirl about the long-standing issues that could involve one or two of the current Blues attackers departing in order to free funds and space for this rebuild to occur.

Bayern Munich’s all-time second-highest goalscorer Lewandowski is an option being eyed by the west Londoners according to The Guardian, though it is understood that Barcelona is the favoured destination at this current moment. Therefore, other options will need to be considered and a certain Antonio Conte favourite has been touted. Lautaro Martinez is a player who helped get the best out of Lukaku during their time together in the blue and black of Inter Milan, and the Argentine has continued this great work with Edin Dzeko as Simone Inzaghi’s side are embroiled in a title race with local rivals AC Milan.

The 24-year-old was close to joining Spurs last summer and his quality hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Tony Cascarino suggesting the club splurge the money on this acquisition at the expense of Werner, who could also be on the way out this summer. “Chelsea will not win the league until they find a proper finisher. The attacking players they have now are top talents in many ways, but they lack a clinical goalscorer,” Cascarino said in The Times.

“The FA Cup final against Liverpool showed again that they need too many chances to score — or not score, as was the case on Saturday. Mason Mount is their leading scorer in the league this season, which is not the way it should be at a club like Chelsea.

“I like the boy Lautaro Martínez at Inter, so I would suggest Chelsea offer the Italian club the chance to take Romelu Lukaku back on loan, get rid of Timo Werner, and bring in Martínez. He is the sort of technical, ruthless forward they need.”
