Chelsea’s final two Premier League games could be vital in the Blues’ hunt for Champions League football next season

A convincing 3-0 win over Leeds United has taken the weight off from Thomas Tuchel’s shoulders amid the race for Champions League qualification. Chelsea waltzed past Jesse Marsch’s side at Elland road, with goals from Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku to secure a crucial three points.
The Blues’ triumph in Yorkshire has put the ball in north London’s court ahead of the derby, with Chelsea now four points from Arsenal and eight from Tottenham. Though Tuchel’s side have played a game more, the west Londoners sit in a fairly comfortable position – though the race for top-four is far from over.
Behind the Arsenal and Spurs sit Manchester United and West Ham in sixth and seventh, respectively. However, both of which are out of the race for Champions League. So, Chelsea will be looking over their shoulder with just two games in the Premier League to play.
With that in mind, football.london compares the Blues’ next three Premier League fixtures to their rivals.
Leicester City (H) – May 19
FA Cup final redemption, take two. Chelsea smothered Leicester City 3-0 when the two sides met in November, thanks to goals from Antonio Rudiger, N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic.
While the 2021 FA Cup final is far from raw anymore, the Blues will likely be looking to pile on the misery in the running to secure Champions League football. The Foxes struggled against opposition rallying for Champions League football this season with losses to Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs since the turn of the new year.
Watford (H) – May 22
The final day of the season. Chelsea end the Premier League campaign with a massive game against an already relegated Watford side.
The Hornet have only ever beaten the Blues once since the turn of the new millennium, with a win in February 2018 when Tiemoué Bakayoko was sent off inside the opening half an hour. While this may seem an easy game for Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification, Watford’s training ground is just a stone’s throw away from London Colney, Arsenal – the plot thickens.
Arsenal’s next four games
Leeds United (H)
Newcastle United (A)
Tottenham’s next three game
With Tottenham drawing against Liverpool last night, they can now acquire 71 points if they win their remaining fixtures with a trip to Arsenal next. If Chelsea beat Leeds on Wednesday, it would mean if Tottenham drop any more points top four would be secured. If Tottenham lose another game and Thomas Tuchels side picks up one more point, then top four is secure for the Blues with a superior goal difference advantage.
